Please don't compare RPF/S writers to Holocaust deniers.
On a post that I cannot read by some fanfic writer I don't read, there is this passage.
I have to mention Holocaust Denial here. I know that's a bit much, but it's a prime example of a false dichotomy. There's only one side to the Holocaust issue. That's all there is to it. The Nazis murdered millions of Jews, not a few here and there. Nevertheless, the moral equivalency people have successfully promoted the ludicrous concept that there are two sides to every issue, when in fact there might be ten or twenty---or only one. It's interesting that they only promote the idea of two, isn't it? When confronted with a really simple concept, they still think they have to look for an opposing viewpoint, even though they give legitmacy to, well, illegitimate sources.
What false dichotomy? I write fiction. I admit I write fiction. And do I need to go on about ignoring the other victims of the Nazi Holocaust?
It's one thing to make up stories based on small scraps of public statements by celebrities and admitting it's fiction.
It's another to ignore massive amounts of living witnesses and gobs of court and visual evidence to prop up a conspiracy theory demonizing an ethnic/religious group (hint: they ain't saying the Romani are responsible) and propping up a reprehensible political system. That's one reason why I don't automatically call conservatives I disagree with 'fascists.'
I'm more than a little sensitive about this. One of the sources I read for my cracked out slash epic was Michael Shermer's essay on Holocaust deniers, including how people know the Holocaust happened.
Tinhats? That's another can of worms. Haven't seen any in my corner, but it is super-small. I decided to stick with AU because of that. If you can guess none of the setting is real, I figure, you can guess that the relationships aren't real. If not, I got a little disclaimer. I do what I can. I cannot do much about other people wanting to believe something soooooo much they will ignore any evidence contrary to it(for instance, Holocaust deniers). I can, however, make it clear it's fiction.
