Why is RPS the 'evil' and historical fiction, alternate history, literary theses on Herman Melville and Nathaniel Hawthrone, political satire and a lot of other fiction using real people is not? I think it is a combination of looking down on anything fans produce, touchness about stalking and insane, gossipy fans (which I am prone to worrying about and why except for some excrusions, I stay in AU) and 'OMG They are NOT gay!!!!'
2b. Yet, weirdly enough, deathfic with fictional and real people aren't given as much screaming. Okay, there was one on-line novel thinly based on REM where people objected to the lead singer being anorexic and dying. Yet, no kerfuffle comparing deathfic to snuff films. (thanks to
2c. For fuck's sake, your favorite musicians, actors and writers, and whathaveyou are not perfect. Nor are they all awful. They are real people. People fuck up. Real people who are famous can fuck up too.
2d. Wrestling. Pop. I don't get it. I also don't find any of the members of Metallica attractive at all. Eminem does nothing for me, though I suspect he could use a good prostate massage. I have no need to repress my thoughts, so he is not doing the catharis thing for me.
2e. And just in case anyone is thinking of it, you can't get married in Massachusetts unless you live in Massachusetts. I guess your fandom will just have to stick to a big gay Canadian wedding.
2f. And now a PSA from Fiction Writers Against Bad Characterization. Women will react in many ways to finding out their ex-boyfriend is dating another person. Indifference, vague abstract support, ruminations on if there was something 'wrong with them,' anger they cannot get on with their lives and the ex can, curiosity. They will not always be their bestest friend. Or psycho hose-beasts out to destroy their lives. Ditto for men whose ex-girlfriends are dating another person.
2. There is nothing evil with making canonically straight fictional characters gay, or vice versa. A problem of characterization, a set up for some really really horrid stories but not evil. Also, people have sex for different reasons. They won't suddenly fall into true love. I doubt they will suddenly dis previous SOs if they got along with them before the sex. Also, they might adopt new labels for themselves. Or not.
3a. Draco/Harry makes no sense to me. Nor does Draco/Hermione or Draco/Ginny. Folks, he hates Muggles. He hates wizards from Muggle families. He hates the Weasleys. You better make his redemption work if you want the pairing to work.
3b. Snape is a snarky, greasy-haired git. He is noble, but he has no problem being an ass to get the job done.
4c. I am glad that Harry actually lost his temper. He's a teenager, and even really nice ones act like asses at times.
5. Songfics can be done better. There are a lot of interesting songs that link well with fiction, original or not. The problem is most the people assume that all you need to do is splice lyrics into a story and it make sense. No, not really.
6a. JK Rowling isn't my favorite writer. Potterverse, however, is a fun place to play in. I was scared off of Tolkien by The Hobbit. If I can pick an influential fantasy novel for me, it would be One Hundred Years of Solitude and War of the Oaks.
6b. For some reason, I cannot get much into yaoi. The only anime I really liked was Cowboy Bebop.
7. "Speculative fiction," "magicial realism" and "dark fantasy" are for cowardly lit majors who don't want to admit they like science fiction, fantasy or horror.
8. Why don't stories dealing with rape and sexual abuse deal with the actual long healing process after a rape? No, it cannot be cured by sex. No they won't like it at the end. Read the The Survivor's Guide to Sex for some reality checks.
9. I pretend that season six and seven of Buffy never happened.
10a. Your poor abused but still sticky sweet Mary Sue gets little sympathy for me. Let me tell you something, I was physically abused as a kid, by kids in my school and my stepfather. I reacted in bad ways. I reacted in good ways. You're not going to be made fun of because you are too beautiful, it doesn't work that way. When your trust is messed with by kids and adult(s) who are supposed to care for you, it can distort your good and bad qualities.
10b. I like self-inserts. They are not great literature by any means. There is a weird charming quality of meeting someone for the first time and seeing their interests. Of course, the self-insert must bring their less stellar qualities in, plus keep the characters like they are. Think of it like a motto of a hiking society: "Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints, kill nothing but time."
11. Fandom is still just another goddamn hobby.
12. Don't assume female characters are looking for a boyfriend.
Well. That's fun. I've got to edit some resumes.
