I confess. I am addicted to quizzes, especially in teen magazines. No matter if it is marketed toward teenage girls or twentysomething women, they often have quizzes on looooooooove. Are you ready for marriage? Are you a good girlfriend?

In the best case scenario, I am less scared about not getting married than being ultimately alone. I have all sorts of best case scenarios, depending on some factors:

1) Am I in a relationship?
a) Just one or many?
b) Are members of my family living?
c) Children are incidental. _IF_ relatives or significant others have them, I can play with kids with short periods, and then hand them off to their parents. I will never babysit for longer than six hours. I am not mother material, much less stepmother material.

2) If I am single
a) Will I have close friends?
b) Will we live together, or will I make a habit of galavanting around to visit?

It is amazing to me that subtly and not so subtly, these sort of magazines (and in some small way, other quiz materials) put the fear of spinsterhood in women. "Get a man, any man, even if he's a jerk, pop out kids, NOW, before you become a little old lady with cats." Fuck you. I am not scared of that, as long as my friends and siblings visit me with treats for the cats, as long as I can flirt with gentlemen during "80s night" at the church hall, and my neighbors and I can pelt the noisy teenage brats on the basketball court with water balloons. I don't mind sitting out on the porch with an S.O. (or more) drinking tea and watching the sun set, either.
