Aug. 27th, 2004 09:06 pmGetting home sucked.
I cannot seem to send mail.
I want to make posters countering Citizens Council For Human Rights (or as I call them 'Human Rights Except for Critics, Freezoners, Psychiatrists and Anyone that Thinks The Idea that All Mental Problems Are From Aliens Attached to Your Body Is St000pid'). Problem is, yeah, there are problems in psychiatric care. Yeah, people use different methods to treat emotional and social problems. However, mental hospitals and psyches have freaking ethics boards and open hearings while the people CCHR are associated with do not and OMG Lisa MacPherson and ack! Listen, if I am not buying that the autism should be 'cured' and having ADD makes me dumb, why the fuck should I buy your kettle of fish? Oh, and I'm on anti-depressants and not shooting a school or a docile zombie KTHXBI. If I figure that hypnosis and affirmations will help, I can get them cheaper. Hell, meditation, exercise, homeopathy and herbal supplements, cognitive-behaviorial therapy, etc. are still freaking cheaper than being on the Bridge.
(Don't get me started on the 'Aspergers and ADD are made up by the psyches.' Christ! Oh, and more than one gene can be responsible for one trait, like say, short attention span.)
I guess what really set me off was someone writing about this mental health bill in CA. I suspect it will be a convulted mess, maybe the wrong things will be funded, but seeing someone writing like all there is restraints, drugs that turn you into a zombie, and electroshock just makes me want to scream "You are repeating half-truths passed down from folks whose methods for treating mental illness are straight out of The Snake Pit! They still believe homosexuality is a disease, oh, excuse me, a lower tone. They are willing to blackmail former members with their private confessions. Even the eval psyches are forbidden from doing that. If you don't believe automatically what the media tells you, why do you believe this?" Then again, I am not in California. It affects me too, though. There are people who are afraid to admit they are depressed or whatever because they think that is all that there is for them. There is so much stupid shit about anti-depressants that people cannot seem to talk about thinking about using them or what it does and doesn't (Adbusters, you wacky Canadians, I feel more like fighting the power now than I did when I was sitting at home and deciding that I can do nothing). Actually, never mind medication or psychiatry, just the ignorant beliefs will make it harder for people to get any kind of help.
The thing that kills me is that people seem to think that they are speaking truth to power or something when they repeat all this. I think sometimes people dismiss 'experts' too quickly and prop up people who they see as 'rebels' too quickly as well. You can find it in any group, political or social. Not only should we watch out for tyrants in high positions, but wanna-be tyrants too.
Don't worry, I'm OK. I'll just calm down and forget about it, until I see one of those fucking posters again. Meanwhile, er, I like cheese.
