If I write a novel about a just-released and tattooed Russian thief managing a gangsta rapper and getting tangled with her 'thief family', the Russian mob, and a record label magnate who just happens to resemble Suge Knight vaguely, that will make me rich beyond my goofy fantasies, yes?

There will be great cynical dialogue about how everyone is a thief, it's just a matter of how you treat other thieves and what you steal. She has bad teeth thanks to repeated blows to the head and suck-ass Communist dentistry. Never mind that the little experience I had with prison are visits to my now-deceased stepfather and Oz. I'll bet I can make it like a Greek tragedy, that she is so used to her identity as a thief, that she barrels toward a confrontation she might not survive, with her client and his straight-laced brother caught in the middle.

Then more details came out from her. She came from Siberia. She 'left after the bell', not getting a shorter sentence by snitching or volunteering for tasks. She got married for a brief period to a 'brother' two years her junior to distract the rest of the campe while her 'older siblings' could break into a guard's house. She and the rapper bounded over similar tattoos: a needle, a bottle of booze, cards, and the legend 'Ruin'. The only sort of place I could think of that happening in is New York. The man is tight-lipped; maybe he senses I'm falling in love with his manager. I better cool it.

Ah, the thoughts you get from a mix CD of old school rap and reading a book on Russian prison tattoos.
