Apr. 11th, 2003 10:43 pmIn an odd state of wakefulness. Have some things to do.
Started reading Permission to Believe: Four Rational Approaches to the Existence of God. I got it because it looked interesting and an Objectivist gave it a bad review. Okay, I'm a bit of crank, but I have my reasons.
It is not a bad book, and I am not as well versed as I should be to address the astronomy and biology arguments. But for the argument from morality case, I keep on going back to this question.
If morality can be rationally argued to come from God, we still have the problem of universal ethics. At several different times, different religions have had exceptions to the 'murder is wrong' ethic (which was the pivot of the author's argument). At other times, other religions have made it more strigent (for instance, other species of animals, not just humans). So, I am still on the same question the author: how do we know murder is wrong?
There are some other questions and thoughts, but I haven't finished reading the book.
Want to look up other things, finish others.
