Apr. 21st, 2005 08:53 pmI think what cheeses me the most about most discussions about the new Pope is that criticism of those in power (liberation theology), the pointing of inconsistancies in who is denied the Euachrist being dependant on which US party is in power (why has Ratzinger threatened to deny Patiki?), and anger about what is said about women and gays is lumped into one word: 'relativism.' Apparently, those who criticize the powerful (and let's not forget, the gay bashers aren't exactly facing angry mobs of gay men) have houses built on sand.
Actually, I am a flaming absolutist. I believe that people must not interfere with another person's free will unless they intend to harm others. I believe that people must be taken as individuals first, with groups they belong if applicable. I believe also that I may be judging reality wrong, but willing to go with guesses if it makes me act gently and kindly toward others. Because I think that currently, the Catholic Church is not acting gently and kindly, I am a 'relativist.'
Also: Listen, Benedict, a word of friendly advice: it's that very "dictatorship" that makes liberals smile and nod and insist we be civil towards you, even when you insinuate that our ideas are objectively evil.
The supporters twist themselves into . . .something. "Its personalist, sexual ethics protects the unity of mind and body, of sex, love and procreation."
I don't know, but it seems to force people away from acknowledging their mind and bodies' wants and leading them into repression or abuse of others.
The commentator to the thread said the alternative was 'The Matrix' or 'Gattaca.' Unfortunately, this (im)personal ethic will lead to something like 'The Handmaiden's Tale.'
Then again, why am I ranting when I ought to be in bed. I'm dressed for it, for crying out loud.
