This St. Patrick's day, I spent it screaming at preachers and watching Christian music videos. My grandmother did wish me a good one, even though for some reason, I forgot to go for a Guinness float like I told myself.

You see, there is this street preacher named Pastor Corbin who screams real loud. He screams random Bible verses, real loud. We scream back real loud. One of the regulars got into a imitation of a drunk guy, just for the occasion, verging into an imitation of a stoner ("Yeah, my dealer was in jail, but he is back out. He walks funny but thanks to his connections, he gets the good shit.")

Because there was nothing on TV, I watched some Christian music video program. It was called "Daystar" (heh heh, do they realize who else is called the daystar, or rather, the morning star? Great fodder for Christians who hate Christian rock).

As time went on, I found I really could not believe in the central beliefs of Christianity, much less the Catholicism I grew up. My reactions to it get extreme--either say the nastiest stuff I can think of or give those that try to follow the more peacable tenets some respect.

I went about watching it as an learning experience--how does one make music arising from your deepest beliefs not sound like crap. And if it sounds like crap, is it a sign you're more concerned about fame and fortune in that small CCM genre (heck, maybe in the mainstream--look at MXPX!)?

I really could not find any songs I digged in a musical sense, since I was too busy catching very oblique (and rarely, really overt) references to born-again Christianity ("Oh, he said 'people of the rock,' must be referring to the Rock of Ages or something"). In the midst of dodgy shit like Audio Adrenaline (sp?) covering "Free Ride" ("We, like, think it is about our Lord and Saviour's promise of eternal life. It's kewl"), I heard some okay songs.

I did get to hear Sixpence None the Richer's cover of one of my favorite one-hit wonders, "There She Goes" (Covered by a female singer--I bet the 'Christian rock is from Satan' folks are furiously scribbling notes, and after a Southern Baptist PSA too!) and some 10,000 Maniacs with an acoustic arena rock hook (Violent Femmes via All About Eve?) song called "Flash." I'd like to hear that one again.

Me? I don't see why music from other religious traditions cannot have their own music video shows. Heck, there are Muslim rappers, and Perry Farrell is slowly returning to Judaism, and there are nifty neo-pagan bands out there (Godsmack is not nifty, people). For some reason, though, Satanist bands tend to sound like crap. *shrug* And some conspiracy theorists *swear* that rock'n'roll was invented by Satan . . .
