This came up in a journalfen community, and since I rather have the wank in my own journal, I'm keeping it here.

Lyndon Johnson and other Democrats, regardless of their own personal feelings on the subject, passed civil rights legislation against the wishes of the Democrats (Dixicrats) against it. This lead to the South going Republican, but the ones who did are remembered as being in the right.

I know there are Republicans who are not anti-gay and pro-'who cares, if I don't have to pay for it, let the gays marry.' I know some of them might be in Congress. Unfortunately, the highest ranking offical (I will refrain from my mumblings about December 2000) disagrees. He is one person, of course, but perhaps his high position and the idea that 'middle America' agrees with him is keeping the Republicans who disagree silent. Not to mention most people confuse religious marriage with civil marriage but don't get that it is screwing with the rights of religions that do sancitify same-sex unions.

I really do not know what say, as a registered Independent who is so because I am not good with groups (even groups I agree with). Who has suggestions? I suspect that 'change parties!' is as helpful as 'install Linux!'
