So, this is an experiment. Is ambient exposure to Harry Potter fans, seeing the two movies, quarter-finished books and reading one too many badfics enough to write an okay short piece? Can I write about a subject that bothers me while keeping the subtlety?

Set somewhere between GoF and OoTP. Hard PG-13, implied f/f incest. Bellatrix Black Lestrange and Narcissa Black Malfoy are both creations of JK Rowling, and therefore not mine. This is not endorsed by Scholastic Books. No profit is being made off of it. Feedback welcome, especially where I got it wrong and right.

Narcissa knows that she is only beautiful. She isn't as brave as Bellatrix. She knows she wouldn't last a day at the hands of the dementors. She knows she would crumble if her Draco was hurt. That was why he was at Hogwarts. As crawling as it is with mudbloods, it is at least safe. Draco is willing and able to tell just what that conniving fool Dumbledore is doing. Really, Dumbledore sneaks the same way a child does, noisily. Besides, everyone knows not to bother Draco. Lucius also realizes that sending him to Drumstrang would be . . . obvious.

Perhaps she can delay the inevitable, but the honor of two families is at stake. Draco and Lucius are all she has. The estate is in the hands of her cousin, that common popinjay Sirius. Not that he takes care of that estate; being an escapee (how did he do it and why didn't he take Bellatrix with him, she wonders), he might not want to attract attention. She has heard stories: strange visitors at all hours and his tirades against the good name of Black. He never calls on her, and perhaps that is just as well. He is going to get himself killed one of these days. Maybe for some cause he barely understands or for pushing the wrong person with his 'pranks.' She won't be weeping at his grave. Of course, if he doesn't break his neck between now and winter, she might have to take matters into her own hands.

If Lucius too . . . at least he kept his allegiances quiet. No matter, Lucius will work on Fudge, and she will work on the placid surface of the family. Just grit her teeth and smile at the nice Ministry folks when they come to dinner. Bellatrix was brave and cunning, but foolish. She gave a fine speech about loyalty to Lord Voldermort, but that is best said to a Death Eater gathering, not to the entire Wizengamot. She couldn't lie about her passions. It was the only thing she couldn't lie about.

She knows this from the nights they slept in the same bed, before they married their husbands. They wouldn't sleep though. Legs locked together, Bellatrix would press too hard with those tapered fingers. Not that Narcissa was kinder with her embraces. She would push Bellatrix against the wall, holding her down, demanding more than she thought she wanted. Bellatrix would pull at Narcissa’s blonde hair and Narcissa would stroke Bellatrix’s dark hair.

They no longer sleep in the same bed, they have children of their own, but Narcissa still misses her sister. She no longer comes for tea and counter-intelligence. She's in that awful prison, growing thinner from starvation and madder from the dementors. Narcissa shudders at the thought of how her own looks would suffer, how she would suffer. Perhaps the light of belief brings brighter from the horror. Perhaps Bellatrix's will is stronger, like a potion is made stronger by fire.

No matter. If Narcissa cannot be strong in Azkaban, she can at least be strong in resolve. She will protect what is left of her family. She will wait for her sister. This is not only Bellatrix's test, but hers too. A mere babe couldn't have defeated Him. She has her own ideas, but He will defeat those who would make him taste death again. Surely, He will come again and give order, the true order of the pure of blood and will.

Besides, there is word the dementors have turned. Bellatrix may be coming home.
