What kills me is that both the husband and the parents think they are doing the right thing. Their supporters assume either the parents are deluded or the husband is greedy. They may be right, and yet they both still think they are doing the right thing.
I don't know what I would do if it was me, or someone I loved.
My distaste about euthanasia may be the one of the remnants of Catholic girlhood, but I am not sure I want to take the responsiblity of if they do not recover.
I could live in a wheelchair, live with assisted care, but Alzheimer's, even with an otherwise healthy body, scares the shit out of me. People in favor of physician assisted suicide seem more scared of the former than the latter. Disability should not be a death sentence.
At the same time, I wonder why able people considering suicide are treated for depression. Depression impacts productivity and, often, health. They are disabled too and need assistance. Shouldn't they have the option of PAS?
Someone writing in favor of PAS made a point that continues to stick with me. He said that with decisions about war and business being so casually decided without regard of impact on bystanders, the guilt we feel is transferred over to people who make smaller life and death decisions: abortions, suicides, etc. Life is only precious when it doesn't get in the way of profit. He is right, and yet, it seems to offer nothing to replace that ratio of profit over life.
I don't know what I could offer.
